MASTERS OF THE GUITAR: STANLEY JORDAN & MURIEL ANDERSON

 On Friday, May 24 at 8pm, the Tennessee Jazz and Blues Society (TJBS) will present in concert two world-renowned guitarists: Stanley Jordan and Muriel Anderson. The concert will take place at the Nashville Jazz Workshop’s Jazz Cave. Tickets are $30 (plus a small convenience charge), and will be available online at masters.brownpapertickets.com beginning Wednesday, April 24 at 9am.

This is a rare opportunity to experience the music of two acknowledged masters of their instrument in an intimate listening setting. It will be an evening of unforgettable technique and virtuosity.

MURIEL ANDERSON is an internationally recognized artist, equally comfortable with Jazz, Bluegrass, and Classical music. She has studied with Chet Atkins and Les Paul. Les Paul said of Muriel, “ . . . just one hell of a guitar player. She plays the way we all would like to.” She is the host and founder of the legendary “Muriel Anderson’s All-Star Guitar Night,” a virtual who’s who of guitarists, held annually in conjunction with the NAMM show.

Muriel’s fingerstyle guitar method has won her a National Championship. Her playing was featured in the Woody Allen movie, “Vicki Christina Barcelona.” Muriel’s music circled the world on the space shuttle Discovery. A Nashville resident, she has returned home to record her latest CD (her 14th) with Stanley Jordan as a guest artist.

STANLEY JORDAN surfaced in the mid 1980’s and was soon recognized as a guitar prodigy. His unique style of play (the two hand tapping technique) allows him to play two melodic lines simultaneously, and even two guitars at once. Stanley’s virtuosity attracted the attention of jazz icons such as Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones and Benny Carter. His playing has earned him four Grammy Nominations. His style has been described by DownBeat Magazine as “bold, individual, jaw-dropping.” His recent CD, “Friends,” is a collaboration with a number of jazz luminaries including Christian McBride, Mike Stern, Nicholas Payton, and many more. The CD has been nominated for an NAACP Image award in the “Outstanding Jazz Album” category. Stanley’s latest project, as a member of the American Music Therapy Association, is to realize the “full healing potential of music.”

The concert will feature solo performances by Ms. Anderson and Mr. Jordan, as well as a duo performance. The venue is the Nashville Jazz Workshop’s Jazz Cave, an intimate 80-seat listening room with world-class acoustics. The Jazz Workshop is delighted to assist the TJBS by providing the setting for this amazing concert.

The Tennessee Jazz & Blues Society is a nonprofit organization with a 40-year history of supporting and promoting jazz and blues in the area. With an acclaimed website and newsletter along with concert productions, the TJBS is active in “connecting, supporting, and serving jazz and blues.” This concert kicks off the Society’s 2013 membership drive, and those attending the event will be eligible for discounted memberships (new and renewing members).
